the watchman at the gate

“It is only through your conscious mind that you can reach the subconscious. Your conscious mind is the porter at the door, the watchman at the gate. It is to the conscious mind that the subconscious looks for all its impressions.”

  1. Hi Barbara – this series resonates with me because it’s well-executed, as we have all come to expect of your work, but also because it reminds me of a photographic essay I made a few years ago. It’s called Postcards From The Asylum, in which each image features exterior natural light spilling in to an interior dark place. (If you’re at all interested to check out the series, there are some sample images on my blog, under the “My projects” tab. But I digress!) I really like the blown light in the third image; it generateds a mysterious, otherworldly feel. I think you’ve communicated the intriguing binaries of inside/outside, light/dark and conscious/subconcious really well here… thank you for sharing!

  2. Your works are great! You are so consistent and I find that for black and white works, you have a great skill and eye. There’s never to much noise, the blacks and whites are aren’t too aggressive, and the grays are enough to enhance, but not wash out. I’m pretty sure you are in my top 5 favs for B&W photographers, and that really is saying a lot.

  3. Hi Barbara. These are extremely powerful images and make me think immediately of a quote from the poet William Blake “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear as it is, infinite”. Beautiful work as always.

  4. Into the darkness, through, and out to the light. Excellent photo representation of how we usually deal with our subconscious, when we do steel ourselves to deal with it…
